Sciatica is characterized by pain in the lower back, which through the hip moves down to the back of the leg, and in some cases it is affecting the feet and toes. It usually occurs only on one side.
Sciatica pain is known to be too tedious. Most treatments include drugs that have a range of side effects, including revocation of calcium from the bones, and in severe cases, surgical intervention is recommended.
Sciatica, also known as radiculopathy, is neuralgia which primarily is characterized with pain in the body that is innervated by Nervus ischiadicus
Nervus ischiadicus is the largest nerve in the human body, which starts from the lower back area and sends nerve branches all the way to the lower leg and foot.
Sciatica symptoms
As the main symptom is the appearance of sharp, burning pain accompanied by a feeling of numbness, weakness and stiffness. In most cases it occurs unilaterally, i.e. from the waist it goes down leg-length.

Also, some positions of the body can affect the intensity of the pain, so pain usually increases when upright, walking, kneeling or bending. While lying down, the pain partially reduced, and in some cases it completely disappears.
Causes of sciatica occurrence:
  • Degenerativechanges andprematureaging of thediscussionbetweenthe vertebrae
  • Due to improper walking and/or sitting
  • Wearing high heels
  • Muscle stretching
  • Lifting too much weight
  • Excess body weight
  • Damageddiscandnerveinflammationof the seating nerve.
Whatever the cause, the pain can be very painful and debilitating. The pain can also be blunt, sharp and strong, temporary or permanent, and increased at each effort -- coughing, sneezing, and it is often followed by numbness.
Most people, who suffer from sciatica, decide for less intensive and more natural treatments that aim at reducing the major cause for the pain.
In addition we will present four natural ingredients that can help alleviate the pain caused by sciatica.
In some people, only one of these ingredients works much better than the other. In such case the treatment should be continued with the same ingredients until the pain goes away or at least is reduced.
1.Turmeric
Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It has a long history in ancient medicine where it has been used to relieve pain in the fight against serious diseases, as well as against some bacteria due to its antibacterial properties.
Since the nerve is inflamed, turmeric can help the body reduce this inflammation and thereby reduce pain.
Turmeric is used as a spice for cooking, so you can use it also for treatment of this health condition. You should be very careful, because turmeric may act inhibitory on some drugs (anti-coagulants), so check the possible interactions before starting its consumption.
Also, turmeric is not recommended for pregnant women because it can cause unwanted contractions.
2.St John’s wort oil
This plant has historically been used to treat pain caused by sciatica. With its anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, St. John’s wort stimulates the body to rebuild tissue and relieve pain.
However, before proceeding with its application consult your doctor as it may interact with some medications.
3.Devil’s claw
Root and bulb of this African plant are used for making many types of remedies, including anti-inflammatory. Devil’s claw has been successfully used for relieving pain from sciatica, arthritis, gout, gall bladder and others.
This plant can cause some allergic reactions and other side effects, but these are extremely rare. This herb is not recommended medication for diabetes or people suffering from blood pressure, so be sure to consult with your doctor before using it.
4. Jamaica Dogwood
This plant is often confused with the American dogwood. This herb in large doses can be toxic. However, appropriate doses can still be effective in relieving nerve pain, migraines and insomnia.
It is made from the bark of the plant and is available as a tea, tincture or liquid.
It is banned for children because it can be toxic. Children can use it but only under medical supervision.
