Bay Leaves- What Are They Good For?

Pleasantly aromatic bay leaves are one of the well-recognized culinary leaf-spices in use since the earliest times. In the legends, bay laurel is deemed as the tree of the Sun god.




Medicinally, the leaves of the Laurus nobilis tree, have been used since the ancient times to treat problems associated with the liver, stomach and kidney.

Now, modern scientific research has confirmed numerous health effects of bay leaves, especially for diabetes and heart disease.

BAY LEAVES ON YOUR FOREHEAD – WHAT ARE THEY GOOD FOR?
HEADACHES AND FEVER
If you place pre-warmed bay leaves onto your forehead, they will eliminate headaches and reduce fever. Bay leaves act as a medicine for many ailments such as bronchitis, laryngitis and severe migraines.
GOOD FOR DIGESTION

Bay leaves are good for promoting digestion and can treat digestive disorders such as heartburn, constipation and irregular bowel movements.

In case of indigestion and bloating, you can take 5 grams of bay leaves, add a piece of ginger and boil this in 200 mil of water till ¼ water remains. Add some honey and consume this twice a day for relief. It also acts as an appetite stimulant if you are recovering from illness.
SORE THROAT

If you suffer from sore throat, this herb comes to help: place 10 bay leaves in 250 ml boiling water and leave to infuse for 15 minutes. Gargle and then drink the tea lukewarm.
DIABETES

A study was conducted by the Department of Human Nutrition, Pakistan, to test the effect of bay leaf on type 2 diabetes.

Forty people with type 2 diabetes were divided into four groups and each group was given different quantities of bay leaf. At the end of the 30-day study, it was observed that all the subjects showed a marked increase in serum glucose. The conclusion was that using bay leaf reduces risk of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes.

Note: Pregnant women should avoid eating bay leaves in excess as the chemical compounds in them may cause abortion.
