You may have heard of Ayurveda? The ancient indigenous Indian system of healing and medicine.

But do you know where the traditional treatments and formulas come from and what they are made up of? A large part of the medicine comes from the tiny fruit known as the Amla, Amalaki fruit or the Indian gooseberry.

This powerful fruit has been used in India for over 5,000 years to help rejuvenate and boost immunity, among other things. Amla is a seasonal fruit that is available during the winter months in India where it grows wild in the tropical forests, and is yellow and green.

Amla is a great source of vitamins and nutrients, and, as with most berries, it also has a number of antioxidants like polyphenols, which can help in reducing the risk of degenerative cancer. Amla is said to have 30 times more polyphenols than red wine.

It is also rich in vitamin C, and, in fact, its juice can have up to ten times more vitamin C than fresh orange juice! Its large concentration of the vitamin means as it is prepared it doesn’t lose any vital vitamins by the time you drink it.

There are a number of benefits to your health to be gained from this tiny Indian fruit, and here are just some of them:

Stomach ache

It’s anti-inflammatory properties can help with stomach ailments like pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, infections, and digestion.

Diabetes

Amla can help prevent diabetes by improving the function of your liver and your pancreas. If you eat or consume Amla regularly it can lower the sugar level in people with type two diabetes by naturally regulating the insulin in the body. Studies have shown that this remedy is more efficient that other traditional diabetes medicines and treatments.
Liver detoxification

Amla can help to clean out your liver, particularly if you have taken drugs for an illness like tuberculosis.

Cancer treatment and prevention

Antioxidants have been proven to play a vital role in the treatment of cancer, and even in the prevention of some types of cancers. With its anti-inflammatory properties, Amla can decrease the amount of damage done to the cells.

Skin treatment

Again, because of its anti-inflammatory properties, Amla is great at treating skin conditions like rashes, pimples, acne and other skin inflammations.

Hair growth

Use Amalaki powder on your head (mixed with some warm water) to stimulate hair growth. Leave it there for one hour, before rinsing off and you will notice the effects if you do this regularly.

Great for your hair, skin and nails

A great natural treatment in fighting dandruff, Amalaki also encourages the regeneration of tissue all over your body, and particularly in areas such as your skin, hair and nails. This is why you can often find it in the ingredients for hair and face products.

How to use alma…

You can use either fresh alma, dried alma or preserved alma. Fresh alma is delicious and tangy and with some red chili is a great snack or tasty as part of a salad or meal. With fresh alma you can also make fresh alma juice, which is a great way to consume the fruit. Dried alma can be sprinkled on meals alongside some ginger and salt, and is a great way of including the goodness of the fruit in everything you eat. Preserved alma is a nice way to always have the fruit to hand, this technique will see the fruit last for months and remain delicious.
