According to Douglas Husbands, the thyroid regulates our metabolism. He’s is a clinical nutritionist and chiropractor in California. For those who don’t know about it, eh explains that the thyroid glands have a butterfly’s shape and are just below your Adam’s apple.

Hypothyroidism is the thyroid’s underactive condition. When this happens, there is slowing down in the calorie-burn rate of the body. The body temperature and the energy levels also fall.
In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid becomes overactive and all of the above-mentioned rates increase.
According to the author of the well known book, “Living Well with Hypothyroidism”, Mary Shomon, over 59 million Americans have hypothyroidism. She claims that a significant number of them don’t even get a diagnosis.
In men and women above 60, hypothyroidism is a commonly occurring condition. It is claimed that iodine deficiency is the main cause behind hypothyroidism.
Symptoms
Some of the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are as following:
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Heavier periods
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Intolerance to cold
  • Mood swings
  • Forgetfulness
  • Constipation and hoarseness
Anyone who seems to have some of above-mentioned symptoms must get a test for their thyroid hormone and the thyroid-stimulating hormone levels. If you have the problem, you must consume synthetic thyroid hormones. The thyroid function can also be improved by taking vitamins and minerals.
Here are some of the minerals that play a very important role in this condition.
  1. Selenium – They thyroid hormones require selenium for changing into dynamic structure. Just take 200 mcg of it every day and your thyroid’s wellbeing will improve.
  2. Zinc – Zinc is required by your thyroid hormones for them to work properly. The scientists at the University of Massachusetts studied and proved that taking 26.4 mg of zinc daily for 4 months helped in improving thyroid hormone levels in people having zinc insufficiency. You are however recommended to take just 10mg of the mineral every day and 1 to 2 mg copper.
  3. Iodine – It is well known about the role of iodine in creating thyroid hormones. However, you should know that iodine can in fact turn out to be a danger component in the condition of hypothyroidism. Iodine is capable of exacerbating your current conditions and cause irritation of the thyroid.
It is recommended to take 150 mcg iodine every day. You can add iodine to your diet through these sources:
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Dairy
  • Kelp
When taking these foods, avoid any supplements. This can cause excess of iodine, which can create issues.
If you want to boost your thyroid health, make sure that you begin taking all these important nutrients. When you have a healthy thyroid, it will play a very important role in the maintenance of your overall health.
