There is a rising interest in ‘super foods’, and for good reason.  With our lives reaching faster and faster paced we want foods that can provide a powerful nutritional punch. The guava fruit is rising as a ‘super fruit’. The Central and South American fruit has a delicious tangy, set flavor. Every part of this fruit (seeds, leaves, and skin) are edible and good for you.

The USDA says that 100 grams of guava fruit have the following nutrients (100 grams is about half of the average guava fruit):
  • 68 calories
  • 14.3 grams carbohydrate
  • 2.6 grams protein
  • 228.3 milligrams vitamin C (381 percent DV)
  • 5.2 milligrams lycopene ( 52 percent DV)
  • 5.4 grams fiber (21.6 percent DV)
  • 624 IU vitamin A (12.5 percent DV)
  • 49 microgram folate (12.3 percent DV)
  • 0.2 milligram copper (11.5 percent DV)
  • 417 milligrams potassium (8.8 percent DV)
  • 22 milligrams magnesium (5.5 percent DV)
  • 40 milligrams phosphorus (4 percent DV)
This is a very dense grouping of nutrients and minerals. No other fruit has such high nutritional densities and such a varied assortment. Many of these minerals and vitamins are immune boosters. The 350% of your daily allotment of vitamin C is a quick insurance policy against getting sick. You need to eat about four or five oranges to get the same value!
This fruit is unbelievably rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from forming in the body, and minimize damage caused by free radicals. They keep the body functioning as it should and stop cells from freaking out. Guava contains large amounts of lycopene, an anti oxidant known for its extreme ability to prevent cancer. It can literally stop the growth of many types of cancer.
Generally good for the body, guava helps the day to day functioning of the body as well. Its high levels of potassium and fiber keeps our electrolyte levels stable, maintain a low blood pressure, prevent digestive issues and diseases. A study found that the potassium found in guava actually decrease blood pressure and blood lipids. Potassium also helps joint health, promotes proper heart functions, prevents bone density loss and lowers the risk of strokes and kidney stones.
